Preminda Jacob is associate professor of art history and theory in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Maryland– Baltimore County, USA. Her research focus is on the social and political aspects of public visual culture. The photographs and video footage featured on this website, with the exception of the historic photographs of Madras city in the "Anna Salai - Then and Now" slide show, were shot by Ms. Jacob during visits to Chennai between 1989 and 2006. Irese Wong is a freelance designer who graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County with a BA (Cum Laude) in Visual Arts. Her expertise is in the areas of graphic design, photography and interactive media.
Renee Shaw aka VJ Poppins is a video installation and live video performance artist. Drawing from a large archive of footage VJ Poppins manipulates video through live, spontaneous editing. The output is an audio-visual cornucopia of personal and communal narratives communicated through musical loops and multiple layers of digital video.
Music for the videos “Superstar” and “MGR” is excerpted from the Tamil film song “Cinema Cinema” composed by G.V. Prakash Kumar and sung by Shankar Mahadevan. Released in June 2008, the song commemorates the 75th anniversary of Tamil Cinema. The song is featured in the film Kuselan (2008) directed by P. Vasu and produced by K. Balachander, Aswani Dutt and G.P. Vijayakumar.
